History of Mossberg

Most people associate the Mossberg name with the famous Model 500 series of slide action shotguns, one of the most popular weapons of our time. This shotgun, which is used in law enforcement and in the shooting sports, is but one in a long list of firearms designed and manufactured by O.F. Mossberg & Sons.

Oscar F. Mossberg, a Swedish immigrant, worked for some of the biggest names in the firearms industry, starting with Iver Johnson. There he very quickly began his career in designing shotguns, pistols, and rifles, which now bear the name of his employer, Iver Johnson. After several years at Iver Johnson, he went on to spend time at Shattuck, J. Stevens & Tool Co., and then Marlin-Rockwell.

During this same period of time, O.F, and his sons Iver and Harold were also producing their own firearms in a loft in New Haven, Connecticut. One of the most notable and unique achievements during those early years was the Brownie pistol. This was a four-barrel Derringer-type pistol of break-open design that incorporated an ingenious rotating firing pin. Although Mossberg is not normally associated with pistols, he was instrumental in the development of many of them for Iver Johnson.

The success of O.F. Mossberg & Sons is truly the American dream. The hard work, guts, and perseverance of the founder, Oscar, and his sons and grandsons made Mossberg one of the most familiar names among firearms enthusiasts all over the world. As the inventors of many “firsts” in firearms, O.F. Mossberg & Sons has carved a niche in American history that need take second place to none.
