In John Donnelly's book, The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversion he list two loads for the 577/450 Martini Henry neither is a pistol powder load//per se..The first is: 400 gr Lead PP powered by a full case of Cartridge Pyrodex @ 1200 fps his source is listed as JJD. the second load is a 400 gr lead bullet using 38.0 grains of IMR4198 @ 1450 FPS and he list Barnes as the source of the data. However, I would ask at www.hodgdon.com about the use of Trail Boss for reduced loads in this cartridge.case capacity is quite large here..being approx 7.98 CC or 123.20 grs of water compared to the 45-70 which is a 4.893 CC case or 75.51 grs of water a gain of roughly 50% capacity...which would lead me to believe that there has been little work done with pistol powders. I find nothing on this cartridge in Phil Sharpe's Complete Guide to Handloading and in Ken Waters designing and forming Custom Cartridges for rifle and handguns..he shows at least 3 different cases Named the .577/450 MH and the 577/450 (English Govt pattern) and the .577/450 SOLID MH from a casual glance at these 3..I would think no data is interchangable..........Yiu might want to google "Alan M. Petrillo" who has authored several works on the MH firearms

Forrest, I suggest the XMP=5744 powder and the use of my toilet tissue wad/filler like I use with my loads. The issue of " velocities all over the place " will be cured. In fact you'll pick up about 100 fps. muzzle velocity. Although XMP-5744 is NOT position sensitive, the use of the TP wad will keep the powder to the rear of the case, which makes for consistent powder ignition. If you try it, I think you're gonna love it like I do.

Forrest read this and then go to the website and you will see my step by step instructions on how I do my toilet paper filler.
Hi Steve, I shoot both the .43 Spanish and 45/70 trapdoor and also the .43 Mauser. I use a smokeless powder made by Accurate Powder " XMP-5744. I use a toilet tissue filler which has virtually no added weight and leaves no residue. I suggest you www.accuratepowder.com and ask for a free copy of there "reloading guide" then follow the loading data for the Springfield trapdoor only. I also have a book titled "Shooting The .43 Spanish Rolling Block" by Croft Barker, very informative and reinforces my confidence in using toilet tissue as a filler. Steve copy and paste this into your browser, you will see my step by step instructions on my method.
