With what you have given us to work with "Evans" and "Sporter" it is a difficult task..but i have a listing for an "Evans Repeating Rifle Company of Mechanic Falls Maine that was incorporated in 1873 a Evans, J.E. of Phila Pa. that made a pocket Pistol and then there is the William Evans of Londom England who made double rifles.....my "guess" would be the firat company who made a "Sporting Rifle"(about 300 units" w a bbl of either 26"...28" or 30" or the "NEW MODEL" Sporting Rifle of which thwere were some 3000 made....You can read a bit about THIS "EVANS" in The Standard Catalog of Firearms...19th edition as compiled by Dan Shidler and published by Gun Digest Books There are 14 models listed in the SCofFA..You may also find info in Norm Fladerman's "Guide To Antique American Firearms....and their values(Krause Publications) or in The BlueBook of Gun Values this one is on-line at www.bluebookinc.com they charge a modest fee OR You can list all the markings on your Evans along with a complete physical discriptions ...such as...action design, caliber..barrel length and design..stock configuration, etc and the firearms condition and I'll check it through what I have for free
