There was no Bay State Firearms Co. Bay State was a trade brand name for Harrington and Richardson arms Company. It may have been made in the 20s or 30s. What store the shotgun was made for is unknown. These were inexpensive firearms with little collectors value.Your single barrel 410 might bring a 100$ if in exc. condition. Good luck and sorry about that. Just because it's old , don't mean it's gold .

Thanks, RJay, for the info. It's been in a closet for 30+ years. I remember my mom using it in the 40's for bird hunting, & I used it a few times years ago.

The local Gander Mountain had one on their used gun rack last year for $55, though it was a 12 ga. I'd expect a .410 would probably bring about another $25. You could probably get more if you sold it at auction--I've seen old .410's sell at auction for close to $200.

while researching h&r firearms i discovered there really was a bay state arms co. in the 1890's. purchased by hopkins & allen around 1900 and h&r aquired the bay state name from h&a arould 1915.
a bay state 410 chambered for 3 inch shell would have been manufactured by h&r between 1937 and 1941. 1937 was the first year the 410 3 inch chamber was listed in h&r catalogs. until 1937 all h&r small bore single barrel were chambered for the 2 1/2 inch shells.

Thanks b. goforth. One of these days I'm going to learn that nothing is as it seems when dealing with old firearms. I really didn't know I didn't know it untill I found out I didn't know it. I always believed it was just another trade name. Thanks again. You are one of the plus's on this forum.
