Sounds like the extractor (the claw like thing that grasps the rim of the cartridge and pulls it out of the chamber) is stuck in the "open" position. When you cleaned it, as it worked flawlessly before doing so, you probably forced some dirt, powder debris, or gunk under the extractor. Try moving it by hand, it should move outward and then snap back towards the center of the bolt. If it doesn't, it needs to be cleaned out or the spring is broken.

Jamie, Since the Model 64 is a current production firearm and you just purchased it, it is still under the Savage Warranty. I suggest that you contact Savage at www.savagearms.com for their take on the problem...even if it was purchased off the used gun rack, Savage will often cover such malfunctions and repairs.

Thanks for the help. I checked the ejector tonight. It is not stuck. I DID have to do some filing around the 'port' where the round drops in, b/c it got jammed so bad that I had to use a screwdriver to get the shell out, and I knicked the port, and had to file it some to get a round to drop in. Is it possible that I filed a little too much and now the shell drops TOO far in, thus not letting the ejector grab the rim? If that's it, I'll have to buy a whole new barrel!!! OUCH! HELP! Is the filing I did to blame?
