Legal air gun hunting in NY

Frank, I haven't been able to access the law as of yet. The notice was published on page 13 of the current Gun Digest Magazine(the old Gun List) and it appears the law takes effect on 1 Sept 2010 by redefining the air gun(s) of .177 caliber and up with a MV of 600fps or more as firearms. My point is this, while this looks like a good thing for small game hunters...it seems to have been done "on the quick" without(seemingly) any thought to the other doors this opens. There has been a mild under current in NY to make air guns subject to the control of certain political subdivisions(read NYC) Once the classification is "firearm" then the people like Mayor Bloomberg can just include them under their local registration and purchase laws....WITHOUT...so much as a discussion..just an executive order......GEORGE I did move to Texas....and Uncle Sam moved me right out again...to Southeast Asia and beyond...FWIW...I choose not to return..............

Thanks, George........but....New York would argue the point! More so now that I am one of the "leech's" sucking the NYS pension system dry(at least as far as the NYC newspsper's and TV stations profess!)

Curt, Your correct!.......but.....ther history of NYC and the people like Mayor Bloomy is that they will grasp and export their interprtaion through out the State. As an example. If an item is a prohibited purchase in NYC..say a compound bow, then outfits like PRO BASS will compile a list of NYC Zip codes they won't ship to...and to make sure someone from NYC isn't sneaking a zip code away...adding any and all abutting zip codes to that restricted list...I live an hour and fifteen minutes of high speed Expressway driving from NYC and I have to deal with this happy horse hockey...opening up a door...just little...allows these idiots new avenues to impose restrictions...Hell, they have already grouped the .50 caliber muzzle stuffers into the same mayoral dictate as rifle chambered for the .50 BMR ...The State and a few Sportsmens groups thought they were getting a "gimmie"...within a year they find that was only part of it...as in "gimme the shaft."...... at a minimum, the yearly NYC registration fee for "firearms" will now apply to air guns......

George..............been there...done that...got locked up for carrying my drink from the bar to my table..gagged on 3.2 beer and really thought the ten year old telling me his Mom was a virgin and I could cure it for $2(Amerillo) was just to rural..well I was young and impressionible..and..I didn't select NY..the USAF did and the LI War bride confirmed it....now I'm so old that even moving my bowels(as an elective process) is a task...................

depends George...is Amerillo all one town? Funny place had to bring my own jug and give it to the barkeep and had to "buy" a glass and any mixers from the house.at a more than nominal cost the barkeep poured my likker into a glass added a little water and an ice cube and charged me 50 cents..placed it on the bar in front of me..I picked it up to go sit at the table took about 3 steps and a deputy in green cowboy boots had me on the floor..face down and cuffed me...cost me $150 to get out of jail.....another 30 days in the stockade for being AWOL......

I grew up in NYC, air pistols and rifles were always illegal to own or possess. I doubt legalizing airguns for hunting will change the NYC prohibition. Possession, without additional charges, of an airgun in NYC is a summonsable offence. In 1968 NYC required registration of all rifles and shotguns which means that, today, if you live in NYC and attempt to purchase a rifle or shotgun, from a licensed dealer, elsewhere in New York State without a producing a NYC rifle/shotgun permit, the dealer may be violating law if he makes the sale. .

FWIW, The NYC air gun restrictions were for those under 18 years of age....and the point about the NYC firearms restrictions was that DEALERS from outside of NYC and NYS would and do engage in a CYA protocol that restricts the sale of certain,otherwise not controlled, items...like Bows,arrows, BP firearms.knives,pepper sprays etc to certain zip codes..EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE NOT IN NYC...only CLOSE...even the host of these forums has a policy of not shipping large capacity magazines to certain zip codes...like those in Sufflok County, which is not nor has it ever been part of NYC...restrictions like those on handguns..if you live in Suffolk County and a lawfully licensed to carry and possess a handgun...be it for defense,hunting or target use,you cannot take it THROUGH NYCwithout complying with their restrictions...and if you comply but are stopped for a traffic violation and the locked container containing the handguns is discovered..YOU will remain in custody until such time as the validty of your permit can be ascertained...I know of several cases where this happened and the "victim" was detained and then charged(due to time limits on detention) with unlawful possession...only to have the charges dismissed without malice ....it took 72 hours(on avaeerage) to reach the courts and have bail set...point is Beware of seemingly innocent laws..even those that appear to to be harmless are subject to interpretaion..If you own Match grade aire guns and are on your way to an NRA Registered Match...even with a squadding ticket in your possession...and you pass thru a part of EDEN(as NYC considers itself) You will now be able to be detained for unlawful possession of a firearm as it is now a subject of interpretation.....and it is not just NY a few years back a well known pro football player was stopped in NJ he was arrested because Police found ammo....357 Mag..not a firearm and the "case" was brought to court..sentence was public service...all for a couple of rounds of ammo.......once some hot shot anti public official gets their teeth into something..they rationalize their way to fame.........IMHO of course!

I recall reading, several years ago, of an incedent where two New Jersey Brinks employees barely passing through NYC on their way home in their company truck were arrested for having unlicensed firearms. It sounds like NYC may be worse than California... George M.

Let's just say that Kalifornia and NYC are in the same pot of stew..NJ is seasoning....... These anti's conive on the highest level...a few years back when the NY State Armories had indoor ranges that were leased to private gun cluns for NRA gallery league shooting...Gov Cuomo sent this notice..funds have been approved for Armory Range upgrades..please list the things that need improvement a process which I opposed..but clubs went ahead with the result was this..The State said and i paraphrase here, that we didn't know things were that bad....so many safety issues that we don't have funds for...so they closed the ranges and evicted the clubs and there was no recourse...WHY...because "WE" told then these things were bad.............circumnavigation and deciet are the ways of the politico......so beware........IMHO of course!
