Some synthetic stocks don't have heavy enough sidewalls to secure a swivel stud. Pull the recoil/butt plate and check the stocks configuration. It may even have a molded in boss to attach the stud to. If not, I use a chunk of hardwood(a piece of an old stock will do) that I shape to nest into the inside contour and bond it in place with epoxy. Then drill and install as normal. On the front swivel, use a barrel or cap mount. Uncle Mikes offers several diameters that lock securely in place. Go to www.brownells.com and check this number: 593-117-004 That is the Uncle Mikes swivel set for the 7400.

Most synthetic stock are formed with a thin hard shell, often with some kind of foam filler to quiet them down. The thin shell does not provide sufficient purchase for the swivel studs threads to hold. Some after market stocks have a wood filler in the swivel area to accomodate a swivel installation. Have not looked under a 7400 butt plate so don't know how Remington builds theirs.
