I have in shop, an older, very good condition 870 12 ga pump shotgun. It has the ventilated rib. Customer wants the High Vis, fiber optic front and rear sights put on. No big deal I'm thinking. Done lots of these before, but not on the vent rib models.However....the front bead sight on this one is a tiny white ceramic bead, in a small, round metal housing. I thought the whole thing would just unscrew. It will not budge. Anybody run up on this before? Is it a pressed in fit, or rivet? hmmmmm, this is a new one for me. Thanks all !
Jeb, If the frt sight is a bead in a housing...somewhat like a tube mounted on a threaded shank basically a"T" shape...then that is unscrewed..check the underside of the rib to see if the shank extended tthru and was peened a bit...wouldn't hurt to take a jeweler's file to the underside to clear and peening..intentional or accidental...The plain white ivory bead is unthreaded and the shank portion is tapered. It is pressed into the rib. That is not to say that it hasn't been bonded as well...To put your mind at ease I( quote from the factory manual. CAUTION:Use extra care to prevent damage or breakage when removing sight beads. SOME ARE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET OUT WITHOUT DAMAGE. ................

This must be one of those impossible to remove kind Zeke. It will not budge. Gonna have to grind it flush with rib, very carefully, then drill and tap for 3-56 screw. Only way I can see to do it. Thanks, jeb.

On second thought, I could not bring myself to grind off the front bead sight, and disfigure the original configuration of the gun. That pressed in white bead, and socket, WILL NOT come out. ...so.... I came just behind the bead sight, and drilled and tapped for 3-56 bead thread, then secured the front 'lite pipe' HIVIZ, front optic. The rear fiber optic sight just clamps around the vent rib, and secures with cross bolt screws. I must admit, its a pretty neat optic system. Very accurate, and fully adjustable, and in the sunlight looks almost like little LED's. This way, if someone wants to convert it back to original configuration, just unscrew the front lite pipe, and plug hole with 3-56 plug screw. I like this HIVIS "lite pipe" sighting system. Takes very little direct light to activate the light tube. Almost look like tiny LED lights. First one of these I have installed. I would recommend them.
