Handgun Action Types

Handgun Action Types

Today’s handguns are offered in a variety of action types. This gives shooter’s the ability to choose the best option based on their specific requirements or needs. Here we’ll explain some of the differences within the three types of handgun actions.

SINGLE ACTION (SA)

In a SA revolver, the hammer is manually cocked and the trigger is pulled to release the hammer. In a SA semi-auto pistol, the hammer, striker, or firing pin mechanisms are cocked by racking the slide or bolt, or, if a round is already chambered, by manually cocking the hammer. Examples of SA handguns are the Colt Single Action Army revolver or Browning Hi-Power pistol.

DOUBLE ACTION (DA OR DA/SA)

In a DA revolver, the trigger both cocks and releases the hammer during each shot. In a DA semi-auto pistol, the hammer, striker, or firing pin mechanisms are manually cocked by pulling the trigger when firing the first shot. The slide will then automatically re-cock these mechanisms. Each subsequent trigger pull will typically require less pull pressure than the first. Additionally, some DA handguns with an external hammer can be operated in either DA or SA mode. Examples of this handgun action type are the Ruger SP101 revolver or Beretta 92F/FS pistol.

DOUBLE ACTION ONLY (DAO)

A DAO revolver has no exposed hammer and the trigger both cocks and releases the hammer during each shot. In a DAO semi-auto pistol, each trigger pull will cock the hammer, striker, or firing pin mechanisms, and release the same to fire a cartridge in one continuous motion. Each subsequent trigger pull will require the same amount of pressure. DAO cannot be operated in SA mode. Examples of DAO handguns are the Ruger LCR-357 or Kel-Tec P3AT pistol.
