Knowing how to measure a gun’s barrel length is important since plenty of states have regulations restricting how long of a rifle you can carry around or buy. Note that barrel length is a distinct factor from overall length.

• Fully unload your firearm and make sure all parts are secure
• Close the firearm’s action
• Cock the action if applicable to ensure the firing pin isn’t protruding from the bolt’s face
• Use a dowel rod and run it down the barrel – make sure it’s of a diameter that will fit!
• Mark the end of the dowel rod with a marker once it reaches the end of the barrel
• Now take a tape measure or ruler and measure the distance from the marked part to the end of the dowel rod
